Although some patients may require the skills & experience of a Buteyko Educator, many will gain a lot from basic training that you will be able to give with the new MyButeyko App. However if you are to give the best chance of success you will yourself need to understand the Buteyko Method. A small but passionate group of osteopathic colleagues from the UK, the US, the Netherlands and from France met this evening to discuss the way osteopathy is viewed, practised and evolving in our various countries. We all agreed that it was both a privilege and a huge pleasure to meet other osteopaths the world over, on the Skilio platform and look forward to seeing this online community grow.

It's 'ankle' season! As the sports club all restart after the summer break. The chronic ones that flair up in adolescents who have no particular previous injury seem often to be caused by a blocked talus coupled usually with an inferior fibula and resolve quickly once treated!

An International Face of Osteopathy with mutual support for osteopaths is a great idea. Osteopaths tend to quietly plough their own furrow in their own practice and rarely get about to meet others, this will help enormously. It will be like the international Buteyko group where our exchange of information, experience, and practical ideas is a great support to us all. There are not many of us in the world and the time has come to join forces after a hundred years of in-house wrangling while millions suffer misery for lack of the right treatment. Well done!

With the Summer Holidays coming to a gentle end and the new academic term starting, its time to focus again on CPD! There are some interesting talks lined up on Skilio from September, covering both clinical and managerial aspects of practise. I will be restarting monthly open Case Review meetings, we will be welcoming Osteopathy students, who will hold study groups here on Skilio, and we will invite a monthly Star Speaker, who will present a talk. A research presentation group has been suggested, which is an excellent idea. so come forward if you have a recent research project you would like to present to your colleagues.

I treated three pregnant women last week who referred a supine labour with feet in stirrups and an epidural as a "normal" delivery. Shouldn't women be told the truth,, and empowered to experience a really normal labour?

Summary of Tuesday evening's live online debate:

There were twelve participants present, including Marina Urquhart-Pullen, Council President of the BOA.

This was a very useful and informative discussion. It was excellent to see that people had found the time to attend.

Marina U-P clarified that the BOA had had no prior warning of the proposed changes, and that the BOA attempts to set up a meeting with BUPA earlier had been thwarted by BUPA. Marina U-P will attend meeting the meeting, with other BOA representatives, with BUPA set for next Wednesday 30 May.

BOA, and BOA members, have had conflicting information from BUPA, when contacting BUPA to seek... More clarification, which is causing confusion. This is compounded by the brief timeline, which limits the time for proper consultation.

Despite the imposition of a deadline date, and the now-or-never message given by BUPA, there is doubt that this is the case. During phone calls to BUPA, BUPA staff had said that on the 28ththe application process would be closed FOR A TIME (UNSPECIFIED) BUT WOULD RE-OPEN AGAIN "LATER"�.
BUPA's proposal to fix the fees was discussed at length. It is legal for BUPA to do this. There are differing reports that the fees rates have already been set by BUPA, and about how the fees are to be set. BOA's understanding is that they will be set regionally, based on the fee structure that osteopaths give on their application forms.

The application form is BUPA's generic form, and the information needed should be enough to clarify that you have the relevant qualification (DO, or BSc) to treat all age groups, (tick all boxes), marking 'osteopathy' in the treatment technique box. They need to know simply that treatment by the osteopath is osteopathy rather than anything else. If you treat all age groups tick all the boxes, and your qualification, is your DO or BSc etc. If you treat the patient with osteopathy, mark 'osteopathy' in the treatment box.

Marina U-P suggests that by signing up now, there is more space to negotiate, and opting out can be done later if osteopaths find that the conditions laid down by BUPA are unacceptable. Opting out en masse itself can be more powerful at a later stage than not opting in at the beginning. This also adds to the time frame for proper and thorough consultation. Marina urges all osteopaths to contact BOA directly with all concerns and comments, so that the osteopaths are all being heard, and the profession can speak with one voice.

At the BUPA meeting on Wednesday 30 May, BOA will seek to clarify the following concerns, which were raised at the debate:

- The deadline date of 28, and whether there is an opportunity for osteopaths to sign up later
- How the fees are going to be decided.
- What fee levels are BUPA going to propose
- That BUPA will use the GOsC registration as the measure/badge of our standard of practice
- Whether the CRB check a one-off, or if is annual, as some osteopaths believe it to be.

BOA will clariy to BUPA that

- Using the "Osteopathic treatment" should be sufficient explanation about the type of treatment being given for any condition, which might be specified.
- Osteopathic training qualifies osteopaths to treat all age groups, and specific qualifications over and above the DO or Degree are not required. GOsC registration assumes osteopaths have relevant qualification.

BOA will try to ascertain

- If this is going to have an effect on Practice standards by creating levels of osteopathic care. ie if BUPA patients are paying less for their treatment
- If there will be an option at some point to have general clinic cover so that all practitioners regardless of years of experience can treat BUPA patients


Marina wishes to point out an extract, from the BOA forum which raises what BOA considers is the more important point and that is about the restriction of our practice and care of patients.

" it will be great if the actions of the profession match our expectations of behaviour. If we all stand together, they will back down. Bupa tried this trick with the ophthalmologists 2 years ago. When they threatened to "withdraw their labour"�, Bupa beat a hasty retreat. Don't forget, by applying for continuing recognition (by the end of May) you have not actually committed yourself to joining the network. We don't have to sign the contract until we know all the conditions (e.g. fees), which gives us a bit more time. The fees are mainly an issue in London & the Southeast. Nationally, the major issue should be the negative impact this could have on osteopathic care of patients. "

Marina has agreed to attend another live session after the Wednesday meeting to feedback and take queries, from osteopaths. Helena Bridge I tried to get access to the online form today (the deadline) and could not find the link on the BUPA website. After a fruitless search via the BOA, I called BUPA and hung on for ages before being answered. In the end, I was told that the osteopathy network/online application form for registering with BUPA had been suspended, but that it would be reinstated in three weeks, after the existing applications had been dealt with.

As you know I am organising a lecture circuit and hope that here on Skilio we will get to the point where we will be able to browse through an extensive list of fascinating lectures and seminars, where we can join case review meetings and present our research and special interests. In doing so each Osteopath has the opportunity both to earn money from lecturing and to get involved in learning and developing, not just to fulfil their CPD requirement but from the shear pleasure of learning more about our fascinating and wonderful profession, from our enormously talented and far... More too modest colleagues!

Osteopaths are effective at what they do but ineffective at communicating their message to the general public.
Some feel disempowered by the feeling that there is an ever narrowing hoop to be jumped through, as demands for "proof" mount.
I think this is a huge distraction from the main issue: We are responsible for getting our message across to the general public, and we need to formulate our message and identify how we communicate it.
I propose that we use this platform to do just that.
I would like to invite osteopaths and communications experts who are interesting in developing the message and its communication, to put themselves forward here.

Great to see everyone who made it to the first kick-off session of Osteopathy Worldwide!
Really connecting the globe.... with Osteopaths in France the UK and the US all present.
We discussed the way we wish to start working, and the benefits of connecting worldwide to learn from each other. We discussed the many possibilities on this platform of being able to deliver and attend large lectures, seminars, and case review groups. We considered the need for professional mentoring, which is so important especially for graduates in their first year of practice.
At the session next week we will have a case review session. We need to keep it structured, although flexible. So post... More up your interesting cases here on the group page so we can get an agenda ready for next Tuesday...
